Styling Your Spring + Summer Family Photos

Spring and summer bring sunshine, which means it is a perfect time to capture some family memories.

But the age old question always arises - what do I wear?

Here are some helpful tips to help inspire you when finding outfits for the whole family.

  • Stick to a color palette

Spring and summer bring a breath of fresh air and light when it comes to color palettes. Be sure to check out my Fall Fashion blog for more color palette suggestions.

If you like to have fun with bright colors, here are some options:

    • Shades of Blue: Mix in shades of blue (light pale blue, navy) with white and even a pattern that would incorporate both white and blue. This is a classy and elegant way to incorporate basic items into your session.

    • Bright and Fun: Include a navy/dark blue, hot pink, mustard yellow, grey and a pattern that incorporates these colors for colors that will fit each member of the family.

    • Navy + Yellow: full disclaimer, these are our upcoming wedding colors, so you bet this is on the top of my mind! Mustard, navy, light blue, white and a coordinating pattern of choice make great color options.

    • All Natural: Pick a dark green, light green, brown/light brown, white and a coordinating pattern of your choice to feel one with nature.

  • Don’t get swept away in pattern craziness.

I love a good pattern, but let’s stay reasonable here. In a group, we should limit types of patterns or prints to 2-3 (depending on how large the group is) and they need to coordinate with one another. In some cases, coordinating stripes, gingham, florals and plaid can be rocked together.

Although, no one wants everyone to be in different prints. It’s SO distracting when we are trying to view the heart of what the images are - your family!

Another word of advice about patterns is to stay classy. Trust me, I was the 2016 high school senior rocking her chevron shirt. 6 years later and I look back and cringe because its a tell tale reminder of a trend that has long found its way our of the fashion. Avoid fast fashion as much as possible if you hope to display these pictures for years to come.

  • Find clothes that everyone feels comfortable in.

To get the genuine pictures, you have to feel your best self. If Mom is always worried about the way her dress pulls or your little one isn’t a fan of oh so sparkly, but scratchy, sweater - it isn’t going to be a good experience for anyone. It’s always important to be comfortable and confident in the outfit you choose. Do not choose something just because it is trendy, but something that reflects your personal style.

At the end of the day, pick clothes that you feel represent your family. It’s not only going to make you comfortable behind the camera, but also be authentically you. And that’s what Sunnybrook is all about - authentic images that last a lifetime.
